Mountain Bike Tour to the Hochglocker

The mountain bike tour starts in Alpendorf and heads toward St. Johann.

Passing the train station and McDonald’s, you’ll ride through the village of Palfner Dörfl and turn right up the hill. At first, the route follows mostly paved roads. It isn’t until you reach about 850 m above sea level that you’ll pass a gate on the right and turn onto the forest road. From there, the route is better signposted and marked with MTB tour signs.

The route winds uphill and downhill along a beautiful high-altitude trail over the Palfner Kogel and Schleichkogel. From here, you’ll enjoy a fantastic view of the entire valley. It’s very easy to get lost on this part of the route, as you’ll need to take the hiking trail up to the right toward the Hochglocker to cross over to the parallel road. From here, continue along the trail until you finally reach the base of the Hochglocker.

It’s best to leave your bikes behind and complete the last part on foot. The Hochglocker is a peak with a fantastic view, and its peaceful setting invites you to take a break.

Once you’re back at your bikes, head down the mountain via the forest road. Continue toward Kinderalm and eventually on to St. Veit im Pongau. From here, continue down the state highway, past the BMW dealership, to the roundabout. Go straight through the roundabout, ride along the Tauern Bike Trail to St. Johann, and take the last stretch along the national highway back to Alpendorf.

If you’d like to stop at a mountain hut, you should be prepared to take a short detour to the Pronebenalm.
