The masks and figures of the Perchtenlauf can be divided into two main groups: The Schönperchten, recognizable by their elaborate table-like headdresses, and the Schiachperchten, who thrill the audience with their terrifying larvae. Both groups are framed by a variety of accompanying figures. According to tradition, all Perchten figures - including the female ones - are performed exclusively by men.
The Perchtenlauf can look back on a long history dating back to 1869, when it was first mentioned in a document. In recent years, around 400 participants have taken part in 34 groups or as individual figures.
