Tux Magnesite Mine

Description

Guided Hike from the Zillertal Alps Nature Park

In the Footsteps of the Tux Valley’s Mining History

Before the first tourists discovered the Tux Valley, it was home to Europe’s highest-altitude mining and smelting operation at 1,700 m. Until its closure in 1976, magnesite mining provided a livelihood for up to 400 workers. A dedicated company town with an elementary school, cafeteria, department store, movie theater, and ski lift made life a little easier for the workers’ families. We’ll hike to the Barbara Chapel, featuring a fresco by the Tyrolean painter Max Weiler, and learn a great deal about the history of this influential operation along the way to the former mine site. We’ll hear firsthand about the conditions under which the rock was transported from the mountain down into the valley back then. An interesting panoramic hike with a fantastic view of the Tux and Zillertal Alps!
