Winter hiking on the Penken

The winter hiking trail on the Penken is a fantastic way to experience the winter wonderland of the Zillertal without skis. From Mayrhofen, the Penkenbahn takes you to the mountain station on the Penken with a pedestrian ticket. Once at the top, you change to the Kombibahn and soon reach the first reservoir - surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery and inviting huts for a cozy stop.

The well-prepared winter hiking trail is marked with blue pedestrian signs and takes you past the reservoir on the right towards Finkenberg. Along the way, you can enjoy impressive views of the surrounding 3,000-metre peaks, the Granatkapelle chapel and the frozen Granatsee lake, which exudes a very special atmosphere, especially in winter.

At the other end of the Granatsee lake, you walk under a wooden bridge and follow the path straight ahead to the Granatalm, where you can stop for a bite to eat. The return journey follows the same route.

The hike takes around 1 to 1.5 hours there and back and is easy to manage with sturdy footwear - ideal for an enjoyable winter day in the mountains.
