Winter hiking on the Penken

The winter hiking trail on the Penken is a fantastic alternative for non-skiers to experience the winter wonderland of the Zillertal. Take the Penkenbahn (pedestrian ticket 28 euros plus 2 euros deposit) from Mayrhofen to the Penken mountain station. From there, you change to the Kombibahn and reach the first reservoir and the first cool huts to stop off at. On the winter hiking trail marked with blue pedestrian signs, you can take a relaxed stroll past the reservoir on the right towards Finkenberg and admire the fantastic view of the surrounding 3,000-metre peaks, the Granatkapelle chapel and the frozen Granatsee lake. At the other end of the Granatsee lake, you can walk under the wooden bridge and continue straight ahead to the Granatalm mountain hut to stop for a bite to eat. Return along the same route. The round trip there and back takes approx. 1 - 1.5 hours and is easy to master with sturdy shoes. You are welcome to borrow our poles from reception and look forward to a wonderful winter experience in the mountains. Cool tip: Don't forget your hat, sunglasses and gloves!
