Educational planet trail Falera

Description

Thousands of years of astronomical knowledge are gathered on the sun terrace in Falera in Graubünden. Megaliths and menhirs can be found here, revealing unique, ancient knowledge about the heavenly bodies.

When the sun rises over the mountains of Graubünden and bathes the peaks, fields and villages in soft light, you can feel that Falera is a magical place. Above the village, on a wooded hill, lies St. Remigius, an old Catholic parish church with an aisle-shaped walled cemetery. Just behind the church, a forester discovered six pillar-like boulders in 1935, which were placed 19 meters apart or a multiple of this. Investigations revealed that these stones indicate sunrise points on significant days throughout the year.

Research has shown that this area, now known as "Parc La Mutta", was inhabited from the Middle Bronze Age (1600 - 1200 BC). The word "Mutta" stands for hilltop in Romansh. Excavations have unearthed various finds that indicate how intensively the inhabitants of the time must have studied the celestial bodies.
