Details

The Tscheppa Gorge near Ferlach is one of Carinthia’s most impressive natural attractions. Over thousands of years, the Loiblbach stream has carved its way deep into the rocks of the Karawanken Mountains, creating a fascinating gorge with roaring waterfalls, rugged cliffs, suspension bridges, and steep wooden walkways. From the very first step, the sound of rushing water accompanies you through a unique natural landscape.

The absolute highlight of the hike is the mighty Tschauko Falls with its impressive rock arch, as well as the famous Devil’s Bridge, from which you can look deep into the gorge. Along the way, you’ll cross numerous bridges, ladders, and footbridges, making the adventure particularly varied.

The trails are well-secured, yet the hike is significantly more challenging than many other family trails in Carinthia. Sturdy footwear and sure-footedness are absolutely essential, as some sections are steep and can be slippery when wet.

Details:

Length of the gorge: approx. 1.5–2 km

Tip:

For families with older children (who are sure-footed and enjoy hiking), the Tscheppa Gorge is an unforgettable adventure. If you still have energy afterward, you can combine your visit with the nearby Meerauge in the Bodental, the Märchenwiese, or the Tscheppaschlucht Forest Rope Park.

Our recommendation:

If you only want to visit one gorge in Carinthia, the Tscheppaschlucht offers the most spectacular experience. For families with younger children, however, the Groppenstein Gorge is usually a bit easier to navigate.
