The Philharmonic Orchestra opens its concert with a Polish composer who is less well-known in this country but nonetheless significant: Karol Kurpiński, who paved the way for Polish national opera.
Today, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven—through their names and works—epitomize the Classical era. During this period, they frequently experimented with traditional forms and compositional techniques, developing something new from them that in turn inspired subsequent generations. For example, Mozart set new standards for future violin concertos with his Violin Concerto No. 3 and created new qualities in symphonic music with the Haffner Symphony. In his “Romance” for violin and orchestra, Beethoven honed his compositional skills in preparation for his own violin concerto. And for both of them, Joseph Haydn served as a source of inspiration and guidance.
