Description
The construction of the Gerstfeldhöhe fortifications, the largest of the 11 A works between Aachen and the Weißenburg depression, began in 1938.
A total of 14 km of corridors (including machine halls, a military hospital, barracks for 800 men, narrow-gauge railway stations and ammunition depots) were planned.
In the summer of 1940, work was stopped in favor of the Atlantic Wall.
By then, 3 groups of works with 10 fighting positions, 4 observers and the B-Werk Obersimten had been completed, and approx. 5 km of galleries (as of 2006) had been driven.
