Over 80—so what?
How celebrities and lesser-known individuals are aging actively
Demographic change in Germany is leading to an increasingly aging population. The number of people over 80 is expected to rise over the next two decades from around six million today to about eight to ten million by 2050. According to the prevailing view among gerontologists, rising life expectancy is due to better nutrition, hygiene, and medical advances.
In his book “Over 80—So What?”, author Lutz Dreesbach explores a wide range of scientific aspects of aging and profiles 42 prominent and lesser-known individuals who, without exception, demonstrate that even at 80 or 90, you’re not past your prime and don’t have to spend your life in an armchair watching TV or in a beach chair.
Among them are two residents of the Allgäu region: former Federal Minister Walter Riester (82) and Arnold Becker (95), a tailor from Oberstaufen. We cordially invite you to a casual discussion with the author and the people he profiles.
