Hike to the Seefeld lakes

Description

🌄 Here’s what awaits you

The Seefeld Lakes above Meransen are among the most beautiful destinations in the Gitschberg Jochtal region. Depending on your fitness level and desire for a mountain adventure, you can choose between easy, moderate, and challenging routes. Idyllic alpine meadows, crisp mountain air, impressive views, and wonderfully peaceful nature await you. The starting point is either the Margit Mountain Hut or the Altfasstal parking lot (1,606 m). This makes the tour the perfect mountain experience for families, leisure hikers, and athletic summit climbers.

1️⃣ Classic Route Through the Altfasstal

This option is ideal if you’re looking for an easy, family-friendly hike. From the Altfasstal parking lot, a wide, almost flat trail leads along the Großbergbach stream through forests and alpine meadows to the end of the valley. Along the way, Kneipp facilities, wooden bridges, and plenty of space to explore ensure a relaxing nature experience—even with a stroller.

Parking lot → Großberghütte: approx. 45–60 minutes

Großberghütte → Pranter-Stadlhütte / Wieserhütte: approx. 45–60 minutes

At the end of the valley, the Pranter-Stadlhütte—with its large playground—and the Wieserhütte invite you to stop for a cozy break.

2️⃣ On to the Großer Seefeldsee

If you want to go even higher, you can continue hiking from the huts toward the Großer Seefeldsee. From here on, the trail becomes more alpine, steeper, and is no longer suitable for strollers. In return, you’ll be rewarded with exceptionally beautiful panoramic views and an impressive high-mountain landscape. This route is a real highlight, especially during the alpine rose blooming season.

Huts → Großer Seefeldsee: approx. 1.25–1.75 hours

Total time from the parking lot round trip: approx. 5–6 hours

3️⃣ Challenging route via Moserhütte & Kleiner Gitsch:

For experienced mountain hikers, there’s a particularly scenic and challenging route via the Moserhütte and the Kleiner Gitsch (2,262 m). This tour offers breathtaking views of the Dolomites, the Sarntal Alps, and the Altfasstal. From the summit, the trail continues northward via the Ochsenboden toward the Weißalm and then along trails 12A/12B to the Seefeldsee Pass. This route requires sure-footedness, good physical conditioning, and alpine experience. ⛰️

Altfasstal parking lot → Moserhütte: approx. 1:00–1:10 hrs.

Moserhütte → Kleiner Gitsch: approx. 1 hr.

🍽️ Places to stop for refreshments along the route:

Großberghütte – ideal for a first leisurely break

Pranter-Stadlhütte – perfect for families, with a large playground

Wieserhütte – traditional South Tyrolean cuisine

Moserhütte – rustic alpine hut below the Kleiner Gitsch

💡 Our tip:

If you’re traveling with children or looking for a relaxed day of hiking, the route through the Altfasstal is perfect. For a true mountain experience with a lake and panoramic views, it’s worth continuing on to the Großer Seefeldsee. If you prefer a challenging hike with spectacular views, choose the more demanding route via the Moserhütte and the Kleiner Gitsch. No matter which route you choose—wonderful moments in nature and unforgettable views await you.
