The former Art Nouveau sanatorium of Pineta di Sortenna

Sondalo, Sortenna Pinewood

Host
Eden Hotel

Via Funivia, 3, Bormio

Details

Strongly desired by Dr. Ausonio Zubiani, it was built by architect Giuseppe Ramponi, who pandered to its medical-scientific theories and translated them into an architectural language that broke the traditional patterns of hospital architecture, generally severe and heavy, by designing an agile structure set on the wooded slope of Mount Sortenna. The facade, thanks to the presence of verandas and terraces for exposure to the air and sun, was ideal for the hospitalization of the sick and still presents a perforated cell structure that gives the building an impression of lightness.

The interior structure is presented with a graceful octagonal vestibule that leads into a bright living room. From here, through a glass door, one enters a spacious garden. Everything is arranged on a single axis, along a pleasant gallery that immediately accompanies the gaze of those who enter outward toward a horizon of gentle and evocative nature.
