Hohensalzburg Fortress
There is no way around Hohensalzburg Fortress - it is definitely one of the top Salzburg sights. This 1,000-year-old fortress and castle complex rises directly above the countless baroque towers of the old town on the Festungs- und Mönchberg.
Due to its elevated position above the city, it is also the landmark and one of Salzburg's highlights. The largest preserved castle complex in Europe is a hotspot for tourism and, with over 1 million visitors a year, the most visited of Salzburg's sights.
You can visit the castle grounds with the Fortress Museum, Rainer Museum, Marionette Museum, Prince's Room and the Magic Theater.
A visit to Hohensalzburg Fortress is a must on any trip to Salzburg in winter. We'll show you what options you have: there are various ways to get up the mountain.
Depending on your fitness level: a 20-30 minute but very steep walk or a comfortable one-minute ride on the fortress train, which runs every 10 minutes and starts in the old town (Festungsgasse).
If you prefer to spend your time outside or at one of the other Salzburg sights, we recommend taking the train up after the fortress closes (i.e. after 5 pm). The train ticket is then cheaper.
Dogs are welcome on a lead in the outdoor area (fortress grounds). Dogs are not permitted in the indoor areas. Wearing a muzzle is compulsory on the Festungsbahn.
