Smoking at Easter - an ancient custom

Smoking at Easter has a very long history. Already the Celts have smoked in the spring time to thank for everything that nature has given them. For them, incense was used to honor the goddess Ostara. The spring goddess was asked with this custom for help for nature, for health for the forests, the fields, the meadows and of course also the animals. Also for a good harvest was asked.

Our ancestors also smoked at Easter to cleanse the house and yard from evil energy. In the open air, a tree sponge was also often used as an incense burner.

Smoking" is the burning of incense on hot incense or charcoal, over a tea light or the lighting of incense sticks or incense cones. This releases the aromatic and healing powers of plants and plant parts. Incense is known in many cultures around the world. It can be assumed that incense has been burned since humans have tamed fire.

In Carinthia, this ritual is not only common at Easter, but also at Christmas time, when in the mystical Raunächten house and yard are fumigated.

Especially before Easter, people want to clean everything. This urge was particularly large in former times, said smoke expert Annemarie duke: Today it is perhaps no longer so, but in former times that was extremely important that one cleaned each drawer. That's how you said goodbye to winter and hello to spring."

In the past, fumigation was included in Easter cleaning to dispose of old burdens, old energies. "In the process, people often used special cleansing herbs. They act like a cleaning crew. The cleansing herbs work by spreading the smoke throughout all the rooms, taking all the old burdens with them."

"The mix consists of angelica root, which has a strong cleansing effect, myrtle leaf, rosemary, spruce resin, verbena, lavender, mugwort, juniper and sage. When you look at those in their effects, it's a really powerful cleansing blend!"

We will also go through the Fire Mountain Resort again during the Easter season and cultivate this ancient ritual of incense. On the one hand we will work with the 9 herbs cleansing blend by Annemarie Herzog, which we also offer for sale in the store, and on the other hand with spruce resin, our "forest incense".
