Sonneggbrücke Parking Lot, Großarl — Breitenebenalm
Option 1 (shortest route): Sonneggbrücke – Maurachalm – Gernkogel – Alpendorf
The tour starts at the Sonneggbrücke parking lot and follows the forest road for 1 hour and 45 minutes to the Maurachalm at 1,620 m. From there, you’ll enjoy a magnificent, unobstructed view of the surrounding mountains.
The second half of the tour takes you on to St. Johann and the Gernkogel. On the way back, you’ll pass the reservoir and the Geisterberg. At the Gernkogel, you can choose whether to take the gondola back down to the valley or walk back to the hotel.

2. Option / Difficulty: Sonneggbrücke – Breitenebenalm – Karseggalm – Kitzstein/Gabel (Summit 2,037 m) – Maurachalm – Gernkogel – Alpendorf
The tour starts at the Sonneggbrücke parking lot and follows the forest road or a beautiful trail uphill to the Breitenebenalm. From there, the route continues up to the Karseggalm, the oldest mountain hut in the Salzburg region at 1,603m. Tip – be sure to stop for a break!
From the Karseggalm, the trail leads steeply up to the Kitzstein (2,037 m), or as the locals call it, the Gabel. Shortly before the summit, there’s a section of steeper terrain to navigate—sturdy footwear is required.
After descending from the summit, the second half of the tour takes you down to the Maurachalm and back to St. Johann via the Gernkogel. On the way back to Alpendorf, you’ll pass the reservoir and the Geisterberg. Here, too, you can choose whether to take the gondola back down to the valley or walk back to the hotel.

The second half of the tour takes you on a leisurely walk over to the Unterwandalm and then toward the Maurachalm. Return to St. Johann via the Gernkogel and, if you’d like, past the reservoir. Here, too, you can choose whether to take the gondola back down to the valley or walk back to the hotel.
