Ossiach Abbey

These walls have heard a lot. And yet they keep every word to themselves. Meaningful silence. For over 1000 years.

Originally founded as a monastery, today's Ossiach Abbey has seen a lot. And probably heard even more. For not only its founders, the Bavarian Count Ozi I and his wife Irenburgis, have left their stories within the meter-thick walls. Their children, the Polish King Boleslaus and even the soldiers of the K&K army, who used the premises as barracks and stud farm, have also left their mark on the history of the monastery, which was dissolved in 1783. When the monastery threatened to deteriorate more and more from 1816 on, it was finally handed over to the Austrian Federal Forests in 1946 and later converted into a hotel. Since 2009, the Carinthian Music Academy has been housed in the premises.
