With “Coriolan,” Beethoven detached the overture from its theatrical context and developed a distinct, dramatic instrumental form of his own. As such, it transforms a tragic story—that of the title character—into a self-contained piece of music to open a concert. Beethoven also experiments in the Triple Concerto, this time with the form of the concerto, by combining the genres of the piano trio and the solo concerto. In doing so, he opens up more possibilities for dialogue between the orchestra and the soloists. The excellent Hélios Trio from Paris takes on the role of soloists.

Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony marks both an end and a beginning. It is Mozart’s final symphony and encapsulates his entire artistic experience with the utmost perfection. At the same time, it serves as the starting point for the symphonic works of Beethoven and other 19th-century composers.
