A veritable sanctuary of tradition and history in the Fanes-Senes-Braies in the Dolomites: the Prato Piazza at 2,000m!
Today's tour first leads us across the high plateau of the Prato Piazza. After reaching the Dürrenstein hut we then trek uphill to today's destination, the Strudelkopf.
This hike offers a breathtakingly beautiful view of the Dolomites: the Three Peaks seem close enough to touch, the Hohe Gaisl, the Seekofel, the Cadini Group, Monte Cristallo and the Tofana... you really will not know where to look first.
Historically this place has a lot to offer too as it was a hotly contested front during the first world war where an Austro-Hungarian fort (recently restored) served to secure the Pragser Valley. And on the Strudelkopf there is the Heimkehrer-Kreuz (homecoming cross), erected by the Pustertal front-line fighters to commemorate their fallen comrades.
