A historically informed performance practice using modern instruments —that was the idea when musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic joined forces in 1995 to form the Berlin Baroque Soloists. Since then, they have developed their own distinctive sound. Reinhard Goebel, who specializes in the repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries, is regarded as an inspiring advocate of historically informed performance practice for modern symphony and chamber orchestras as well as early music ensembles.
With his unique ability as a conductor to blend his passion for music with a meticulous knowledge of historical sources, he inspires, captivates, and polarizes the contemporary orchestral landscape. For the Chorin Music Summer, they have put together a program dedicated to the theme of hunting, as it found its way into Baroque music.

One of the fundamental characteristics of Baroque music is the principle of concertante. It describes a competitive interplay between different voices or voice groups. This allows the composer to create complex musical structures in which different instruments or groups of instruments take turns coming to the foreground and engaging in a musical dialogue with one another. It is precisely these lively and varied soundscapes—so characteristic of Baroque music—that unite Bach and his contemporary Telemann with the Finnish composer, pianist, and conductor Olli Mustonen. Mustonen’s wild and energetic “Nonetto II” for strings is a showpiece for the musicians. The same is true of Bach’s Concerto in D Major, in which the exceptional trumpeter Matthias Höfs showcases his instrument.
