Leitach Coste, 46, Chiusa
The first rites at the place where the church "Heiligkreuz auf Ritzlar" has been standing since 1743 probably date back to prehistoric times.
When exactly people discovered the unique aura of this place can no longer be said today. One thing is certain: the path to the Latzfonser Kreuz (2,311 m), the highest place of pilgrimage in South Tyrol, on the south side of the Kassianspitze is the oldest pilgrimage path in South Tyrol.
The shelter located near the small high-altitude church at 2,305 meters has offered protection and refuge to many a pilgrim and hiker in past centuries.
All kinds of miraculous stories entwine around this blessed place. For example, at the beginning of the 18th century, the "Black Lord" is said to have determined the place where the crucifix should be erected by shaking his head himself. Prayers are said here at the end of the Way of the Cross, which leads from the Klausner Hut in about 1 hour moderately steeply up to the cross, mainly for protection against storms.
From the Latzfonser Kreuz in the middle of the Sarntal Alps, the view reaches far over to the Langkofel, the Grohmannspitze, the Kesselkogel and the Rosengarten. But it is not only the view into the distance that makes this place special, it is much more the atmosphere that makes the hiker pause and reflect.
