The "Butz" sweeps through the market with a broom today. The "Butz" "dies" on the church square at 6.00 pm sharp when the bells ring.
When carnival reaches its climax all over the country on Shrove Tuesday,
people in Oberstaufen gather for a high day of celebration: Fasnatziestag.
At that time, the plague raged in the market town of Staufen and wiped out the lives of around 700 people. Deep mourning spread among the survivors.
The "Staufner Fasnatziestag" is therefore a day of serious reflection that knows neither costume nor masquerade. However, it is also a day of celebration for community and cheerfulness.
